Beauty and the Geek Copycat Fails in Turkey
Faith W | July 28, 2007A Turkish version of the reality show, Beauty and the Geek did not sit well with the intended audience, or the government for that matter, and was yanked from the air after one episode.
Their version, based on the popular American version created by Ashton Kutcher, was thought by outraged viewers as “sexist”. The Turkish show was titled “Beauty and the Genius”, and if you ask me, that’s why it failed.
The Turkish title automatically gives the men the upper hand. “Genius”? No, no, no, they have to be called, “geeks”. That’s what levels the playing field. Sure, geeks are super-smart, but the word “genius” gives them superiority. “Geeks” make them socially flawed. The title of show is extremely important. I mean, what would you think of a show called, “Bill Gates and the Bimbos”? Would you watch it?
