Is America’s Love for American Idol Starting to Wane?

I was reading an article on USATODAY.com, that said that this year’s American Idol, “Idols Live” attendance is really in the toilet. To date, half of the shows were below 60% attendance, with the lowest in Birmingham, AL at 38.9%. Birmingham is the hometown of past Idol winners Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks.
And after I read the article, I sat here staring at the screen, trying to remember who the hell won American Idol this time around. Oh yeah, Jordin Sparks. Sure haven’t seen her making the rounds on television since she won. And who was it that she won over? Uh, the beat-boxing guy, you know….what’s-his-name.
I really hope that there is an improvement in Idol this year, because last year was weak in terms of talent, and charisma.
And I am looking forward to the start of this season of Idol, but am not sure if I want to see the hours and hours of footage of the people who didn’t make it. That shtick is getting old, and is starting to make me feel like they care more about pimping the Idol brand, and not really looking for talent. When the hit of last season was Sanjaya, a kid with way more hair than talent, everyone needed to think about what the show was becoming.
There are plenty of talented kids out there, enough to keep this show going for at least a few more seasons. I’m looking forward to seeing if any of them make it to the final 12 this year.
