Big Brother 8: Players Fatal Mistakes, Part 1 (spoiler included)

Reality Television: A television show where real people are put into an artificial setting to entertain an audience, usually for cash and prizes.
And so we reach the end of another season of that phenomenon that is Big Brother. From the conversation between Dick and Dani this afternoon, it seems that the jury house questioned them yesterday, and the impression is that Dick carried his daughter through the game. Dani is upset that the jury house does not credit her for the game she played. It will be interesting to see if ends up Dick winning, and if he wins, will it ruin the relationship that they have repaired thus far. Dick seems to be worried, to the point of tears, that it will. If it does, what does that say about Dani?
Anyway, the Donatos perceived personal lives aside, when it all is said and done this is just a glorified variation of a game show, and whether you like the way the winner played the game, or even if you don’t like the winner at all, the winner deserves to win. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
But all the players deserve a moment of props, or at least a look back to see how they ended up sitting on the couch next to Julie Chen.
Carol - Unless a person comes into the house playing hard from day one, the first person voted out is a throwaway player, destined to live in reality game obscurity because they weren’t around long enough for us to remember. Carol got nominated and the thing about it was that she didn’t try to save herself, and her personality wasn’t enough to make anyone keep her around. Would she have become a player had she stayed on longer? Not sure, but Dick would have tried to bring her into an alliance…heh heh.
Joe – When I think about Joe, it always seems like he was in the house longer than he was. That’s how much Joe got on my nerves. This was the first week that the Donatos were put up on the block and managed to escape eviction. And part of the reason was that Joe was so annoying that he got himself put on the block and voted out of the house. If he wasn’t stirring up trouble in the house with gossip, he was telling stupid stories, or running around drawing attention to himself, trying desperately to make good tv. The down side of his eviction was that it allowed his ex, Dustin to show his true colors.
Mike – Who’s Mike? Problem with Mike is that he was just there. I don’t mean he was a floater, I mean that he was just a body in the house devoid of a personality. That didn’t get him booted though. What got him booted was him making himself a target during that week’s veto competition to save Kail. His theory was that the players would see how loyal he was. And they did. But did he think they would say, “Hey this guy is so loyal to the person in his alliance, but he would throw himself under the bus for her. I don’t know how, but I’m sure it is our best interest to keep a guy like that.” Weird strategy.
Nick – I liked Nick and I would have liked to see him around a while longer, and not just because he was a hottie. Unfortunately, Nick was the victim of being in Kail’s powerless alliance, and when he tried to get out, he got caught up in the “hinkey vote” scandal, and the Late Night Crew turned on him and voted him out. Moral of the story: don’t join an alliance until you get familiar with all the house guests.
Kail – Kail’s downfall was that she played too hard and too dumb. I think she designed her strategy based on her success as a business person. She and her husband are very big fish in a very small pond. She was very proud of herself when she roped Nick, Mike and Zach into an alliance with her on Day One. Her logic was that she had “the big, strong, young men of the house on her side.” And if a landscaping competition came up, her team would have surely had the upper hand. This isn’t Survivor, Kail. The other problem with the alliance was that it was not based on any personal chemistry with one another. They didn’t even know if they liked each other. Then, as an individual, she made some very asinine moves. Like ratting out her own alliance, and trying to get Daniele to turn on her father, and making threats without having the power to back them up. The reason she lasted as long as she did was basically because her game was so bad that she wasn’t a threat.
Tomorrow I’ll take a look at the people in the sequester. Enjoy tonight’s show, and as always, feel free to leave a comment.
