Reality television is a relatively new entertainment phenomenon in China, and it has caught on very quickly with the countries viewers. This new trend in broadcast television has not gone unnoticed by the Chinese broadcast officials, and damn it, they don’t like it one bit. And just like the parent who suddenly understands the lyrics to the Lil Kim song their daughter has been singing, there are going to be some drastic changes in their house.
One of the main changes that the government will put in place, starting October 1 will be made with their American Idol-like show. Instead of having everyone vote, voting will be limited to the live audience. Also, the time of the show will be moved from evening prime time, to help discourage viewers. The officials have also made it mandatory that contestants display such qualities as, “perseverance, maturity, good health and a suitable haircut, so as to be good examples for young people”.
According to the Xinhua news agency, the Chinese broadcast officials feel that these types of television shows, “educate people in the basics of democratic voting.”
