AMERICAN IDOL ELIMINATION SHOW: 2-28-08
by Deb Porter-Jones
Tonight’s show begins with the often painful, perpetual montage of songs sung by the Idol contestants. Directly following, we begin with the guys on the chopping block. Jason Yeager was eliminated first. If you recall, he sang “Long Train Running” and the judges clearly didn’t like it. He reminds me of a young Tom Cruise (from “Risky Business”), handsome guy, killer face, but, as Simon said, he just “didn’t stand out from this crowd.”
Then, the sick and twisted tradition of forcing the evictees to sing the very song that got them sent home in the first place begins. I bet this was Simon’s idea. Jason did a surprisingly good job with his song; he managed to get through without a tear.
Next, it was time for the ladies, and Alexandrea Lushington is given the big heave-ho. She also sings her song, “If You Leave Me Now” (which I have to admit wasn’t very good, I just like her so much!) and she does a great job, too. The whole time she sang little David Archuleta was so broken up, so when she completed the song, she walked offstage and gave him a big hug.
Alaina Whitaker was the next victim. She was the girl who wore the hideous blue dress and sang “Hopelessly Devoted to You”. She couldn’t sing the song and broke into tears. Poor thing, I felt so sorry for her. She was so sure if she sang she’d “sound horrible” and she was so embarrassed. The other girls came onstage to give her support and she got through the song surprisingly well. I still think it’s a sick and twisted tradition to make someone sing who’s just had her heart broken and her dreams crushed.
Next up was Robbie Carrico, who sang “Hot Blooded”. He didn’t seem too surprised at being eliminated and managed to sing the song without too much difficulty.
Well, that’s it, the first round of evictees. It was an interesting show and we think, unfortunately, the appropriate people were chosen, so far.
