AMERICAN IDOL Recap: 2-27-08
by Deb Porter-Jones
Last night was ladies night and I sure hoped there would be a higher concentration of super-talented ladies, than there were talented guys on Tuesday.
Alexandrea Lushington sang “If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago; a super dull song for a truly energetic, charismatic young girl. It was unanimous: no one liked it. Maybe she’ll get a chance to try again next week.
Kady Malloy sang “Magic Man,” by Heart and no one liked this one, either. Paula thought she was over-analyzing the song and not very comfortable with it, and I agree. Simon couldn’t understand why the girl seems so talented and charismatic in the quick little spots before she performs, and then… nothing. Maybe she’ll get lucky and get a second chance next week, because I really like Kady and think she’s super-talented.
Asia’h Epperson sang “All By Myself” by Eric Carmen and I think she did pretty well, considering she had some kind of crazy sore throat thing going on that had her voice cracking and weak. She may have needed a cough drop in the beginning, but she did her thing. Simon was the cruelest I’ve ever seen him. He said it was an incredibly difficult song for even a good singer, but she should have never attempted it because she’s simply not that good. She should know her limitations; yada, yada, yada. Maybe Simon needs to get laid because he’s clearly out of control.
Carly Smithson sang “Crazy On You” by Heart and she was just alright. The judges felt it was an okay performance. I thought she just screamed a lot. Everyone seems to think she’s so awesome, but I just don’t see it.
Syesha sang “Me and Mr. Jones” by Billy Paul, and as always, she did not disappoint. She’s the one to beat! The judges loved her and I think, regardless of how this Idol thing pans out, she’s destined for greatness.
Brooke White sang “You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon and played guitar. The song was okay and it was nice that she played guitar simultaneously, but it was nothing to write home about. Her performance was about as memorable as last week’s though. I think she should be nervous.
Ramiele Malubay sang “Don’t Leave Me This Way” by Thelma Houston, and she did pretty well. This is the 70’s disco anthem and she really needed to belt this song out, if she’s going to pull it off at all. For such a tiny little package, she’s got a pretty strong voice. But, she could’ve done better. Randy thought it was just okay, Paula thought her vocals are “truly amazing” but the song choice was wrong. Simon thought the performance wasn’t memorable, and she’s one of the top three singers in the competition but this wasn’t a good song choice for her at all.
Kristy Lee Cook sang “You’re No Good” by Linda Ronstadt and she did quite well. She’s a pretty girl, who’s charismatic, and definitely has presence. Certainly an improvement over last week’s dull “Amazing Grace” performance. Everyone thought she was much better, so she may get lucky and be around another week.
Amanda Overmyer sang “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas and I love her! This girl is truly in a class all her own. Her pipes sounded a little rusty probably from that awful flu bug but I don’t care. Randy and Paula didn’t think the song choice was correct. Simon felt that everything from her hair to her clothing was contrived and forced. I’m sorry, I don’t agree. I think the style of her clothing and her hair is a result of her comfort with the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s rock scene; like, she’s a throwback to that scene. Maybe she is totally unique and out of place in this competition because no one gets her. I hope America doesn’t agree becauase, I think she’s special.
Alaina Whitaker sang “Hopelessly Devoted to You” by Olivia Newton John. Wearing a dull, shiny blue dress, she sang a dull song; it was a dull performance. The judges agreed. Pretty girl, but I don’t know if she’ll be around next week.
I think the ones to beat are Amanda Overmyer and Syesha and possibly Carly Smithson. We’ll find out tonight!
