It’s makeover time, and tonight the girls get snipped, weaved, dyed and blow-dried to bring out their best high fashion looks. But before their scissor dates, Tyra meets with the crew to tell them about her own first makeover experience—she had to get a weave and her agency told her she needed to lose 15 pounds to work in high fashion. Tyra’s mother said no, and they ended up remaking her to go for the kind of all-American look that would snag her choice contracts with Victoria’s Secret and the cover of Sports Illustrated. Since Tyra loves a theme, she has all the girls wearing little tiaras, while she wears a large one. Then, Ms. J walks in dressed as the wicked stepmother from Snow White and gives Tyra an apple. It was a sight, and if Disney ever does a Broadway show for the classic, they should definitely call Ms. J. Tyra eats the apple and fake passes out. Then Mr. Jay shows up dressed like an overbronzed Prince Charming, awakes Tyra with a kiss, and reveals that he’s much stronger than he appears when he carries Tyra off. The J’s return and tell the girls that they will be getting their makeovers but no one knows what their looks will be except Tyra. The girls arrive at the Neil George Salon to participate in one of the best makeovers this show has ever produced. The mirrors are covered with black cloth and as the stylists do their new do’s, Tyra shows up in the corner of the screen as the Magic Mirror from Snow White. The girls weren’t quite as dramatic as in previous years, possibly because there are very few drastic cuts. Samantha gets a fabulous short A-symmetrical cut that takes her from mallrat to high fashion model. She sheds a few tears until she sees the result, and then she’s all smiles. Hannah gets bangs and a bob. Clark gets a dark brown dye job because, as Tyra says, she looks too California and the color will make her high fashion. She comes out looking a bit dragalicious. Speaking of drag, Isis looks very pretty in a long weave. Brittany and Joslyn also receive long dark weaves. Marjorie goes dark brown and the change is definitely complimentary. Lauren Brie goes platinum, Analeigh goes blonde, Sheena gets highlights and McKey gets short black hair. Finally, Elina brings the drama with her fear of letting go of her image. Kiyah, the weave specialist, gives Elina a red curly weave that makes her look like Carrot Top. Elina cries and Mr. Jay tells her underneath all the hair, you are still you. You just don’t want to let go. Meanwhile Brittany looks for some validation from Ms. J. about her new look. He tells her she looks like a a pretty girl who could be a football player’s girlfriend. She takes offense and cries, but he reminds her that if she was ugly she’d really have something to cry about. Later on, they go to WalMart to participate in their first challenge for the evening. Nigel Barker’s wife Christine Chen appears with make-up artist Sultan to tell the girls about the challenge. They will have to film a Covergirl commercial promoting Trublend products without a script. The winner will have her photos displayed in Walmart. Hannah seems the most comfortable with the product and wins the challenge. Marjorie, laughably, calls the place Walgreens, while Elina, who is still getting used to her hair, is a mess. Back at the house, Elina, Brittany and Joslyn talk about their mothers. Brittany goes on and on about how much she loves and misses her mother while Elina says she hates her own mother for various reasons. This prompts Brittany to call the girl an evil user. She asks Elina how she can hate her mother, when she worked to clothe and feed her. Elina tells Brittany, “I’m not going to discuss this with you any more.” They next day they go on a swimsuit photo shoot being shot by Russell James, the photographer who shot Tyra for the Sports Illustrated cover. Mr. Jay also drops a bomb—he won’t be directing them. Since these girls seem to be a bit savvier than those from previous seasons, the judges decided to see how well they could take direction from someone else. Everyone’s more than a bit nervous James tells Hannah she’s a beautiful girl when she isn’t trying too hard. Brittany also tries too hard, while Elina embraces her new red hair and James commends her for it. Isis is completely uncomfortable in her bathing suit and tries to keep her legs crossed the entire time. In the judging panel, Elina is called first and Tyra tells herthat she looks racially ambiguous. Brittany, on the other hand, just can’t bring the high fashion to her beauty and was sent home to the mother she loves so much. Tyra tells her to go home and study European fashion magazines.
