Premier: Tough Love Boot Camp

Ah, VH1, you’ve done so much to help educate America as to the ways of love. How else would ex-strippers and teenage baby mamas learn to love aging rock stars if not for Rock of Love? How would aging rappers with dubious personal hygiene find love if not for Flavor of Love? And how, of how, would tool-worthy losers learn how to pick up drunk girls with low self-esteem if not for The Pick-Up Artist?

Yes, truly, VH1 has done much for the nation’s population of emotionally bankrupt, lost, deviant barelytwentisomethings. And now, maybe realizing there are only so many ways to humiliate girls in “competitions” before the audience cries sexism, VH1 has decided to give ladies the chance for self improvement by educating them as to what men want. Exit Mystery the Pickup Artist, enter Steve the Tough Love Doctor.

Steve Ward claims to be one of the nation’s most successful matchmakers. I’m going to buy it. You know why? Steve looks like a jerk, he dresses like a New Jersey homosexual (much love, Brian), he talks like a douchebag…yet despite this, I still dig him. Anyone who can be likeable with that many things stacked against him must know something about charisma.

The idea behind Tough Love is to take women who are unsuccessful with men and teach them over the course of 8 weeks how to be successful. The resulting training is a mash up of Pickup Artist tricks and Charm School common sense. In the premier, Steve makes the ladies go on a speed dating session, walk around the pool in front of a group of guys, and attend a party. Afterwards, they’re able to find out the impression they made.

The thing that makes Tough Love so entertaining has almost nothing to do with the women’s ability to learn and grow. We get the same old platitudes we get every time we invite horrible women on TV: “I’m confident with my body,” “You don’t know my situation,” “I’m a slut because my dad never loved me.” Nah, the real treat of Tough Love are the men they get to sit as judge and jury on these poor monomaniacal basket cases. Those, gorgeous, gorgeous men with their amazing hair and beautiful jackets. They give honest assessments of all of the women that manage to reaffirm some stereotypes (re: men are shallow), while at the same time shattering others (re: men aren’t perceptive). These men can size up these women remarkably fast and with remarkable accuracy, which is fascinating for those of us who were told by our mothers and aunts and older, more experienced female friends that men were blinded by looks and easily fooled. Turns out, even beautiful men can have emotional intelligence. Who knew?

Tough Love Boot Camp is surprisingly addictive. It’s refreshingly honest, shockingly tasteful, and lacks sexism entirely. And that’s sexism against men as well as that against women. The show refuses to hold women and men to unrealistic standards, and instead forces the participants to look objectively at the reality of the dating world, while holding themselves to a higher standard. But don’t worry–there are more than enough emotional train wrecks to keep things interesting. Without them, would it even be VH1?

Shay “Buckeey” Johnson is making big moves

shayAfter doing VH1 reality show  Flavor of Love, and then Flavor of Love Charm School Girls, we haven’t seen much of Shay “Buckeey” Johnson. Sure, there was the  sex tape circulating, but it’s not like she made an appearance on I Love Money or anything.

That’s because she’s been busy, working on her career. In a magazine for Flavour Magazine in the U.K., Shay talks about the film she has in the works, and a self-development book coming out this spring. Check out this interview, then read the full article at Flavour.

Tiffany Pollard in talks with WWE

VH1 reality show star Tiffany “New York” Pollard is currently in talks with WWE about talking an active role in Wrestlemania. Those of you who have been waiting for New York to get choke slammed or maybe getting RKO’d and kicked in the side of the head by Randy Orton may finally get their wish.

PWTorch.com said that Tiffany may be involved in a storyline with her former reality show love interest, David “Punk” Otunga, from I Love New York 2.

Ms. Pollard’s television history includes Flavor of Love, I Love New York and New York Goes to Hollywood.

The smart marketing would be a crossover of both shows, with New York rehearsing for the WWE on her show, and WWE featuring her on the Raw and Smackdown shows leading up to Wrestlemania.

Not that I watch wrestling or anything…

Tiffany Pollard Speaks Out on “Charm School” and Reality TV in Her Life

It wouldn’t be August without a Tiffany “New York” Pollard reality show, would it?  New York has done four reality shows for VH1 in two years, and made an appearance in Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School, and will drop by I Love Money before all is said and done. And just when you think there is nothing left for her to do, except maybe another I Love New York, the network has found another reality tv vehicle for her in New York Goes to Hollywood, which airs tonight at 10:00 PM.

Recently The L.A. Times interviewed Tiffany, and as usual, she was quite outspoken. She admits that she is actually addicted to watching reality tv herself, and feels that it “can be a lesson on how not to act.”  And it doesn’t matter to her if people also see her behavior on television as an example of bad conduct, because she doesn’t see herself as a role model

She also had some definite opinions about Mo’Nique the host of  the first season of Charm School. She feels that Mo’Nique had very unrealistic and rigid views on how young women are to conduct themselves, and perceived that her main concern was black representation, when it came to the women of color on the show. She also talks about what it is like to pursue her acting career, and how being on reality television has changed her life.

Kat Williams Jumps On the Flavor Flav Racism Train (Strong Language)

Comments Off

Sometime earlier this year Comedy Central did a Roast for Flavor Flav, star of reality show Flavor of Love, and participant in The Surreal Life and Strange Love, and some other totally embarrassing sitcom. Comedian Kat Williams was the host of the roast, and he has been doing a bit recently where he talks about the overt racism and Flav’s take on it.

This video has strong language and liberal use of the N-word, but it is funny. Especially if you saw the roast, which was also funny.

Flavor of Love’s Buckee Doesn’t Want to Talk About Her Sex Tape. Just Ask Her.

Comments Off

Frankly, I didn’t know Shay “Buckee” Johnson of Flavor of Love and Charm School fame had a sex tape. Then, what D-lister doesn’t? Sex tapes are like hidden birthmarks; a lot of people have them, but it doesn’t mean you want them to show you.

But SOHH.com has a short vid where, they offer Buckee a self-hype moment, and she keeps baiting the interviewer to ask her about the sex tape that she claims she doesn’t want to talk about.

“Yeah, I heard the birthmark on your butt looks like Little Richard. Stop trying to take your pants off…”

Take A Sneak Peek at I Love Money

Here’s a preview of VH1’s summer reality show, I Love Money, which features a lot of the folks who have amused us on Rock of Love, Flavor of Love and I Love New York. Although there are a few hook-ups, the goal is to be the last man or woman standing at the end of the series, and get paid for all your hard work and scandalous behavior.

Flavor of Love Spinoff Ditches the “Love” Pretense

Finally, VH1 has come up with a spinoff of their “love” reality shows that totally throws the, “Are you here for me?” question out the window. This summer the cable network will be launching their new show, “I Love Money.”

Honestly, we all knew that everyone on Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, and I Love New York was not there for love. It was always a joke when Flav or New York would suddenly suspect that a contestant was not “there for them”, because everyone was there to boost their careers, or at least get recognized on the street and asked to host parties.

According to Variety.com, former contestants of Flavor of Love, Rock of Love and I Love New York will be competing in a series of reality show competitions, not for fake tv love, but cash prizes. The show has already been filmed, and the casting special is set to air on July 6th, and the series will debut on July 13. Carmelo Anthony’s baby’s mama and VH1 Flavor of Love reunion host, Alani “La La” Vasquez will host the show.
