Acclaimed producer, director and choreographer Adam Shankman has joined SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE as a third judge. Shankman, who has been a guest judge and choreographer on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE since 2007, will sit alongside Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe and draw upon his expertise to critique the dancers throughout the competition.

The all-new fall season of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE airs Tuesdays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Wednesdays (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Shankman, who serves as a guest judge on this season’s audition episodes, will join the judges’ panel beginning with the Top 20 performance show Tuesday, Oct. 27 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

“SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE is one of the most important things to happen in the last decade for the art form,” said Shankman. “Choreography is how I found my way into this business, and I’m proud to be a part of the show. As a filmmaker, it’s an honor to be able to recognize choreographers and dancers, and to be able to bring all of this amazing work into America’s homes. These kids challenge themselves every week, and it’s great for people to see how terrific these dancers are.”

“I am extremely happy that Adam has agreed to be a resident judge,” said Nigel Lythgoe, Executive Producer/Co-Creator, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. “We love bantering and bickering, and yet he still finds a way of capturing the sensitivity of every story told on stage. He is a consummate professional with a passion for dance and a discerning eye, which makes him perfect for us. Plus, it must be remembered, it takes a slightly crazy person to work with me and Mary.”

Adam Shankman is a master of comedy and one of the most loved and commercially successful filmmakers of his generation. His recent credits include “Bedtime Stories” starring Adam Sandler and Keri Russell, “17 Again” starring Zac Efron and “Hairspray,” the feature film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. Shankman also directed the hit viral video “Prop 8: The Musical” for FunnyorDie.com, which was honored by GLAAD and has been viewed over 4 million times.

Shankman’s directorial debut was “The Wedding Planner” starring Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey. He followed that project with “A Walk to Remember” starring Mandy Moore and Shane West and “Bringing Down the House” with Steve Martin and Queen Latifah. His other credits include “The Pacifier” starring Vin Diesel, “Step Up,” “Step Up 2″ and “Premonition” with Sandra Bullock. Shankman’s upcoming films include “Step Up 3-D,” “Going The Distance” starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long and “The Last Song” starring Miley Cyrus.

Joshua Wins So You Think You Can Dance

After two hours of performances, an overabundance of kudos, and much ado about everything, Cat Deeley announced that Joshua is America’s Favorite Dancer and $1 million richer. After the show received 60 million votes, Joshua has become the first street-dancer to win. His mother was shouting (and I mean that in the Baptist sense) in the audience. Joshua tells the world to never let anybody tell you that you can’t do anything and that with God you can do everything.

The show’s producers have also added a twist where there is a top girl and a top guy. Katee wins the top girl slot and $50,000 to boot. She was exceedingly happy. So that’s all folks, the end until next year.

Some of the night’s highlights include performances of the judges’ favorite routines from the season. These included:

Courtney and Gev’s Rumba routine

Katee and Joshua’s Bollywood and Lyrical Hip Hop routines

Will and Katee’s Pas Des Deux routine

Twitch and Kherington’s Vienese Waltz

Twitch and Katee’s Contemporary routine

Then the judges decided to jump in on the action, Mary Murphy, who is not as chunky as she appears sitting behind the judges table, performed with Dmitry from Season 2 and Nigel performs a tap dance routine with dancers from the Debbie Allen School of Dance. He actually kept up with those little kids.

They also had the world’s first live-televised popping battle between Phillip Cheeb, who came down with pneumonia during auditions and couldn’t continue, and Robert Murraine, who got scared and quit. They battle to “Closer” by Kanye West. Phillip was smooth and musical, but Robert is a freak of nature who managed to make fun of Phillip’s style even while doing his own. He won hands down.

So, that’s all folks, the end, until next year.

So You Think You Can Dance: Final Four

August 7, 2008 by Lakiya Emerson

Everyone, get out your charts and make your bets, because we’ve reached the Final Four of So You Think You Can DanceKatee, Joshua, Twitch and Courtney are going to be dancing full out, because this is their last chance to be the favorite. Tonight’s show involved everyone dancing with each other–girl on boy, boy on boy, girl on girl–there’s a little bit of dance action for everyone. Indeed, the judges barraged the dancers with an orgy of compliments about what great performers/entertainers they were; how unexpectedly great they were; how consistently great they were; etc. etc. I was ready to shoot the hot tamale train by the end of the night—all the gushing was hurting my cavities. For you closet fashionistas out there, I’d like to note that Cat was looking especially radiant in a gold mini dress and the kind of uber-straight hair that would make Cher jealous. Though, I’m not sure what Mary’s hairdresser was thinking when she dyed about two inches of the woman’s roots a medium brunette with highlights, but left the remaining hair dark brunette. Tacky doesn’t even cover it. But, to return to all things dance-related, Mandy Moore is rounding out the judges’ panel.

Twitch does another crazy girlfriend routine, but this time with Courtney, who during a one-on-one interview with Cat revealed that she knew she wasn’t the best dancer. Their dance is choreographed by hip-hoppers Tabitha and Napoleon and set to the song Church by T-pain. It’s a fast-paced performance, with every single beat choreographed. The highlight was when Twitch spins Courtney on his head. Cat ask him if she was heavy— he very graciously said that she was not.

Mandy Moore said they were great, and that Twitch always performs full out, and commends them on a great start to the show.

Mary said she felt Courtney’s character an that the routine was a knock-out. She screams. Nigel said he was going to miss everything about the show, except for Mary’s screaming.

Courtney dances her solo to a Mary Higgins number

Power couple Katee and Joshua perform a dance choreographed by Wade Robson who hasn’t been on the show this year because he’s been working in Las Vegas. They perform to “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” by John Mayer. The performance was beautiful according to Mandy and Mary, while Nigel said that Joshua was one of the best dancers on the show.

Katee and Courtney perform a Broadway routine choreographed by Tyce Diorio, which is set to the “Trolley Song” by Rufus Wainwright. Their outfits are fantastic: off the shoulder, late-19th-century-inspired dresses that are short in the front with lots of ruffles and a train. They even danced with umbrellas. Mandy said their wardrobe reminded her of Old Hollywood. Mary said they had a great chemistry. Nigel took a moment to compare the two dancers, and concluded that Courtney didn’t extend her lines quite as far Katee, though he tried to soften the blow by saying there was a very small difference between the two dancers’ abilities.

Twitch bounces on stage with his solo dance to “It Was All In Your Mind.” He makes the girls scream and Nigel says that he is a great entertainer. He talks about his journey and about how he would be in the Navy right now if he wasn’t on SYTYCD.

Joshua and Twitch perform a Vienna-Style Russian dance that plays off their friendly rivalry. Their dance, which was choreographed by Youri Nelson is set to Tchaikovsky’s Nutckracker. They jump, they kick, they do manly looking things and Mandy’s response to their work was to say that there was nothing like watching two men do crazy stuff on stage. But she wasn’t too keen on the fact that Twitch did all the floor work, while Joshua did all the jumping. She said Joshua should have been doing the floor work because he was shorter. Joshua responds, “but I can jump higher” and proceeds to do a back flip. Go Joshua!! Mary gushes about how great they were, and the fact that they’ve never had the dancing style on SYTYCD, while Nigel says I expected you to be good at it because you’re street dancers and it is Russian street dancing.

Katee does her solo to an Imogen Heap song, and in her one-on-one with Cat she talks about competing against her friend in the auditions and what it felt like to almost not make it.

Twitch and Katee perform a Viennese Waltz together, and once again the two of them kiss—or almost kiss. Katee’s characters always seem to be chasing men and Twitch makes a great joke about Katee finally getting her man at the end of the performance. Mandy called it very romantic and said Katee was beautiful. She also said Twitch was great for lifting Katee in a dead press. Mary points out that he has grown and said he has blown her away. Nigel said Katee has been wonderful to watch. Meanwhile, Cat, comments on Twitch’s black suit and bow tie saying that he looks like James Bond. Nigel gleefully asks him to do an impression and Twitch puts on his best British accent to give the famous line, “Bond, James Bond”

In his solo, Joshua decides to flip the script, and leave the stage to dance on the judges panel in front of Nigel. Then he takes his shoe off. Nygel says he has set the standard for untrained dancers. Mind you, Joshua has had training, albeit, when he was very young, but still. Cat tells Joshua that he always makes her smile

Joshua and Courtney do the last couples dance with a jive choreographed by Jason Glikson. Mandy said it was great and Mary talked about how difficult the choreography was, but that they made it look easy. Nigel said there were a lot of things he found disappointing in their performance and began to enumerate them, the crowd belatedly boos—making me wonder if the crowd handlers (those folks who tell the crowd when to sit, stand or sound excited) had fallen asleep. But of course, Nigel gives his speech about the show being just as much about improvement as it is about entertainment.

The last performance of the night was a Mia Michaels piece with all four dancers performing. Of course it was weird and beautiful with a bit of humor thrown in as the dancers did a few herky-jerky renditions of ballet movements.

So the end is near, folks. Tell me who you voted for, and who you think will win—they don’t have to be one and the same. I’ll tell you I wouldn’t be surprised if Twitch took it—the kids love him, but my votes were on Joshua and Katee. I just love that I can vote for more than one person!! How about you?

Two more dancers have completed their final performance on So You Think You Can Dance. After each dancer performed a solo, Cat stood in an electric blue dress that had Christmas tree icing hanging from it and announced that Chelsie and Mark will be hanging up their dance shoes. The blogosphere has erupted with indignant comments about the top 4, but Joshua, Twitch, Katee, and Courtney have worked hard and shown enough personality to get where they are.

So You Think You Can Dance Top 6

We’re nearing the final countdown on So You Think You Can Dance as the top six  compete to be America’s favorite dancer.

Courtney and Mark are the first to perform. They dance a waltz to the song The Time of My Life by Mark Love. The dance is pleasant, though I can’t help but count 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 as they execute the steps. Mary says Mark comes alive in a performance and that he improves week after week. Nigel called their performance beautifully romantic. Adam Shankman, who is tonight’s third judge, said he didn’t know how America was going to vote because the top six is so strong.

Mark and Courtney’s second dance is choreographed by Sonya Tayeh who is the only person capable of being weirder than Mia Michaels. The dance is dark, weird and looks like it would be in a modern day version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show—right up Mark’s alley. Adam said the dance was sick and commends Sonya for bringing darkness to the show. Mary loved it and Nigel says Courtney always finds a way to make things work. He called it a highlight of tonight.

Courtney dances her solo to Rock Your Soul by Elisa and she hugs Cat at the end. I’m not sure if the pressure is getting to her, but she looks like she just might cry.

When Mark performs his solo, I can’t help but think that in future SYTYCD seasons, he’ll be choreographing.

Joshua and Katee are happy to be back together. Their first dance is to All By Myself by Celine Deon. Tyce Dyorio choreographs, and of course the dance is a love story a la Romeo and Juliet. All the choreographers have come to enjoy testing Joshua’s strength and Tyce is one of them. There are a number of lifts, including one where Katee leaps and Joshua catches her by her legs, they spin and she inverts somehow to another position. In another lift, he holds her in the air behind his back, and she extends her legs past his body as he walks forward—very pretty. The crowd loves it. Adam takes a moment to point out the fact that Paula Abdul is in the audience before telling Joshua, Katee and Tyce that they are the “Holy Trinity” of SYTYCD. Mary goes into banshee mode and screams in Nigel’s face, and Nigel says he was pleased to see the two together again. He also points out the Gilian Lynne, the choreographer for Phantom of the Opera and Cats, is in the audience.

Jason Gilikson, an Australian choreographer who works with that country’s SYTYCD, choreographs a passé doble for Katee and Joshua. They dance to Filet from the soundtrack of La Reve. Jason is playing a matador, and I guess you could call Katee the bull. Their performance is fantastic. Adam says Joshua makes him believe in the impossible since Joshua is able to dance so well despite not having extensive training. Mary once again yells like a banshee and Nigel says Joshua just might steal the show.

Katee performs her solo to Can’t Stop by Maroon 5. She’s amped and a bit cheerleaderish, but I think she was doing it on purpose. Meanwhile, Joshua’s solo includes a leap, some bootie drops and a split, which he performs to “Like That” by Memphis Bleek.

Tony Meredith and Melanie La Patin choreograph a mambo for Chelsea and Twitch’s first dance. The interesting thing about the mambo, aside from all the shaking involved, is that it’s danced on the two and four beats as opposed to the one and three. It’s pretty difficult to dance on the two and four when you’re accustomed to dancing on the one and three and though Twitch struggled in practice, he eventually got the hang of it for the performance. Chelsea, who is a solid ballroom dancer was able to pick up for his unease and she was a real firecracker in her red costume with a skirt that managed to move though it was as poofy as an 80s prom dress. Adam said that Chelsea was on fire and danced like an animal. He said that Twitch was obviously out his element, but managed to sell the dance with his face though not with his body. Mary said it was a great routine and gave Twitch props for learning to dance on the two and four beats. She said that Chelsea was fabulous in the Latin style.

Tabitha and Napoleon create a hip hop routine for Twitch and Chelsea where the two dancers fight over a control of a stick. The premise is that whoever control’s the stick controls the dance. They perform to an orchestral version of Janet Jackson’s Control. It’s interesting, though not exciting and I’m not sure if it’s because of the choreography or the dancers. Adam says the dancers were great and Mary concurs. Nigel gives a long speech about how whoever moves to the top four does not matter as long as the audience has been entertained.

Chelsea practically explodes on the stage during her solo performance to “When I Grow Up” by the Pussycat Dolls. She’s wearing a great black fitted costume with a shiny bra top and lime green fringe that moves in every direction she takes. She’s the first ballroom dancer that I’ve ever enjoyed watching dancing solo.

Twitch brings back the glow of the late 80s in his solo, which he dances to Midas Touch by Moonlight Star. He’s wearing large clear sunglasses and gold fronts, which Kat proceeds to try on at the encouragement of Nigel and the crowd, though she seemed to be a bit disgusted by the spit swapping involved. “It was art and nothing else, people,” she yells. I think that may have been the highlight of the night.
