Melissa d’Arabian Talks About Ten Dollar Dinners

RRC: Will the recipes that you use on Ten Minute Meals always use fresh ingredients, or will you sometimes incorporate canned or processed food ingredients as a shortcut?

Mellisa: I definitely don’t want to give you a quote that says, “I will never use a processed ingredient,” That being said, my own personal preference is that I love cooking with fresh foods. In fact, I think that using fresh foods is a great money-saving technique. I love to let the produce department tell me what’s in season. When the produce department has something on sale it is telling you what is in season, because it’s an overstock. But remember, but remember the supplier is Mother Nature. So when Mother Nature has an overstock, it usually means it’s on sale because it’s in season, and that’s the best food anyway. I’m very fresh-food focused, and that’s how I love to go and shop. In my opinion, you don’t break the budget in the produce department. I love using fresh ingredients and I think that you’ll see that in my food. Am I somebody who’s never opened up a can of food? Absolutely not. We’ve all had the days where we’ve had to just get through the day. Will that every make it to my show? For the right episode, the right show, the right reason? Absolutely. But I would say that I’m more alligned with fresh ingredients because it tatses better, it’s nutritious, and in the context of Ten Minutes Dinners you will be amazed at the great, interesting ingredients that are out there that won’t break the bank.
RRC: In either the final episode or the one before that you were asked my one of the judges why you think you should be The Next Food Network Star, and you said that you felt that there was a market for you. In watching you each week, I always thought that your style was very marketable. With that in mind, do you have vision for yourself in the future?
Melissa: My husband and I have a vision for our family, and we do have a set of values and goals that we want to acheive as a family. And we do have a vision and a mission that we use as a guiding principle. In terms of my personal mission, I really want to encourage people along to what every the road is to success. That’s what I want to do in this world, and in this life. And so, being The Next Food Network Star was the next step in expanding the scope of that personal mission. What that’s going to look like in Five years, I don’t know. But I’ll tell you this; if I take that one little mission and apply to more and more people, then that’s what I want to do over the next five years. So, I see myself doing the same thing I’m doing today with the same values, but on a bigger scale.
RRC: Would you ever considering doing a show or an episode where you cook with your girls?
Melissa: (laughs) It would have to be a really long cooking show. “Melissa cooks meatloaf in just two short hours!” For me, if I couldn’t open up who I am, then being on The Food Network wouldn’t be a good fit for me because food is so part of who I am. Sharing who I am is very natural to me and it’s part of my life’s mission, and part of what makes sense for me. The balance is that some parts of my life I want to keep private, and I want to protect my kids and not expose them too much. Would I ever consider it in the right scenario, and the right environment? Yeah, I would consider it, but it’s not where my mind first goes. Maybe a cooking special with them.
You know, last night we had a party and fans were there, and we were signing autographs, and it was so much fun. It was so neat to share that experience with everybody else. By 8:30 we were home, and the kids were asking for their Cinderella toothbrush, and it was like nothing had anything to do with The Next Food Network Star. I want to preserve that. That’s more important to me than any job out there. This show is pretty important to me, but my kids are more important.

Reality Roll Call Interviews Brett August of The Next Food Network Star

Brett August is this week’s Person of Controversy in reality TV news. The second contestant to be eliminated from The Next Food Network Star, he left judges and viewers trying to figure him out.

Chef Bobby Flay and the rest of the show’s judges  always seemed to wonder if Brett actually wanted to be in the competition, because his presentations lacked the focus and energy they expected from someone who wanted to be the star of their own cooking show. On Sunday’s show, he left the judges stymied with his presentation of an April Fool’s Day menu, although he felt that he had won them over.

But what happened at the final judging caused a strong reaction among viewers. Brett suddenly brought up the fact that he and a fellow competitor helped Melissa with her dish. Indeed, we saw him help Melissa put her dish into ramekins earlier in the program, but no one expected that he would tell the judges. Especially not Melissa, who was brought to tears upon this startling public exposure.

A lot of people felt that either Brett shouldn’t have helped Melissa when he saw she was in trouble, or he shouldn’t have mentioned it to the judges. At his exit interview,  I started to ask him about the incident with Melissa, and he cut me off.”What did you think of the situation,” he asked me.

What did I think of the interview?  I told Brett that when I saw him tell the judges that he helped Melissa with her dish, I was taken aback. I told him that I thought that maybe it was a bad idea, that it seemed like he was throwing Melissa under the bus to save himself.

Brett explained that in the unique experience of competing on a television show like The Next Food Network Star, there is no such thing as throwing a competitor under the bus.

“When you work in a kitchen, and you’re an executive sous chef like I am, and you’re working your way up in the ranks, all of a sudden, at that moment the competition almost goes out the window, and it’s just helping somebody because that’s what you do for a living,” he explained. “When I’m playing basketball with somebody and I knock the other guy down…I pick them up and help them. If the girl is having trouble, I’m going to help her, and that’s just how it is.”

Still, if he helped because it was instinctive for him, why did he have to make sure the judges knew he helped Melissa? Brett says that it was just his competitive nature displaying itself. Clearly, a person who draws paralells between a food competition and playing basketball is indeed a competive man. The likeable New York native  says that if viewers thought that what he did on the show was a bit “edgy,”  we might not want to see him play basketball in Central Park.

But, there is no bad blood between Brett and Melissa. In fact, he says that the two of them are good friends, and intend to go out for a martini together very soon. He says that she is very talented, and that he wishes her and all of his fellow contestants the best of luck.

Looking back on his experience on the Next Food Network Star, he is grateful for the experience and hopes that his time on television will open the door to other opportunities. If he had the chance to do anything differently during the competitiion, he would be hard pressed to say what it would be.

“Overall you take it as a learning experience, and you hope that you move on from it, and you take the knowledge and the wisdom that they offer you and you become a star.”

Adam Gertler Will Work for Food On His Own Show

It’s not often in a reality competition show when both the finalists are actually winners. However, it can be said this time around on The Next Food Network Star. Last week Camden, NJ native Aaron McCargo  Jr was crowned the winner of the reality competition show, and his show, Big Daddy’s House aired for the first time on Sunday. But the runner-up, my hometown boy, Philadelphia native Adam Gertler will be getting his own show, too.

Gertler’s show, titled Will Work for Food will have the actor, restauranteur and improvisor doing a kind of “Dirty Jobs” type of show with food industry jobs.

“On ‘The Next Food Network Star,’ Adam exhibited a unique combination of quick wit, passion for food and an engaging personality,” said Bob Tuschman, senior VP for programming and production for Food Network. “He earned millions of fans across the country, who have let us know that we have a second star in our midst. We feel this series is a perfect fit for his talents, letting him showcase his brand of humor while he works for food.”

Some of the jobs Gertler will be working at will be a potato chip tester and a dog food taster. Considering Adam’s personality and sense of humor, his show should be a hit.
